SEYMOUR, Conn. — The floodwaters may have receded but for those who were impacted by August's devastating flooding, the struggle is only beginning.
FOX61 partnered with the Seymour Oxford Food Bank to provide badly needed resources, from food and water to hygiene products during a donation drive at the organization's headquarters on Pine Street in Seymour.
"Water. Water was the first thing we need to address," said Beth Palumbo, a lead at the food bank. "Paper towels, toilet paper, comfort items, shampoo, these are items you need all the time and right now we need them in mass quantities."
Our viewers responded by showing up in numbers and donating a huge amount of food, water, and supplies on Thursday morning.
"This is something I’ve never seen, this is a community coming together," said Palumbo. "Seymour and Oxford, we are small towns and the outcry from the public has been tremendous."
"It just demonstrates the heart and soul of the valley and the heart and soul of my town of Oxford – that people are willing to get out there and help other people," said Oxford First Selectman George Temple.
In addition to food and supplies, the Making an Impact Foundation, an arm of the TEGNA Foundation, gave a $5,000 emergency grant to the food bank. TEGNA is FOX61's parent company.
While the donation drive may be over, the need is not, and there are still ways for you to get involved. Monetary donations can be made directly to the food bank at this link. You can also order items from the organization's Amazon Wish List to be delivered directly.
