MONTVILLE, Conn. — A Montville middle school student was given a police commendation for saving the life of a fellow student who was choking.
Jayce Adams, a student at Leonard J. Tyl Middle School, jumped into action on March 18 when another student started choking while eating lunch in the school cafeteria.

According to officials, the student in distress approached a lunch staff member with both hands on their throat, and that is when Adams ran to assist them.
Adams began the Heimlich maneuver and performed several abdominal thrusts to the student. A school resource officer ran to assist and together, they were able to dislodge the food.
“The quick actions of Jayce Adams undoubtedly saved the life of his fellow student who had choked while eating lunch,” Montville police Chief Wilfred Blanchette wrote in the commendation for Adams.

The middle schooler, who is a scout with Boy Scout Troop 67 in Montville, was awarded the department’s official commendation for lifesaving during a public safety meeting on Monday.
