SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — Two minors were arrested in Southington early Friday morning after allegedly breaking into multiple vehicles, according to Southington police.
Around 5:21 a.m., police were dispatched to the area of Laning Street after receiving a report of active motor vehicle burglaries. Police said that upon searching the area of the Days Inn Hotel at 30 Laning St. and Kenmore Apartments at 78 Laning St., an officer heard voices coming from the rear of 48 Laning St.
The officer reportedly observed two male teenagers committing motor vehicle burglaries, according to police. When the officer announced himself, both suspects attempted to flee on foot and ran towards Interstate 84, police said.
After police gave chase, one suspect was caught quickly; a perimeter was set up, and officers found the second suspect hiding in a wooded area, police said. One of the suspects allegedly possessed a screwdriver that is believed to have been used to attempt to break into nearby vehicles.
Police said that further investigation revealed that four motor vehicles in the area were either entered or had been attempted to be entered by the suspects; one of the vehicles had a side window smashed out, according to police.
Both minors were arrested. The individual who allegedly possessed the screwdriver is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal attempt/burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary, possession of burglar tools and interfering with an officer, police said.
The other minor is charged with two counts of criminal attempt/burglary in the third degree, two counts of third-degree burglary and interfering with an officer, according to police.
The minor who allegedly had the screwdriver was issued a juvenile summons and is set to appear in New Haven Juvenile Court next Thursday, police said. The other teenager was also issued a juvenile summons and is set to appear in Waterbury Juvenile Court next Thursday. Police said both minors were released to their respective guardians.
