Bridgeport shooter arrested, charged with first-degree assault and intimidating a witness

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A Bridgeport man was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and intimidating a witness after he allegedly shot another man from the city in the groin on May 25, according to the city's police department.

Jayvon Coles, 20, allegedly shot a 22-year-old Bridgeport man during the evening hours last Saturday, according to Bridgeport police.

Police said that at approximately 11:05 p.m., they were notified that the victim appeared at a local hospital, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the groin.

The victim said he was shot while walking near Read Elementary School, located on Ezra Street, according to police. 

He was treated over the past few days at the hospital before being released, police said. 

The department’s Detective Bureau is conducting an ongoing investigation in cooperation with the Bridgeport State Attorney’s Office.

After investigating, Bridgeport Homicide Det. Keith Hanson identified Coles as the responsible shooter, police said. On Wednesday morning, Hanson obtained an arrest warrant for Coles, charging him with first-degree assault and intimidation of a witness.

On Wednesday afternoon, the police department’s Regional Task Force, Homicide Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Force found Coles inside the Greene Homes Housing Community and arrested him, police said.

Police added that Coles was taken to the police department and served with the warrant; his bail is set at $1 million with the requirement that 30% of the bail amount be deposited in cash directly with the court.

Coles is scheduled to be arraigned at Bridgeport Superior Court on Thursday, police said.
