HARTFORD, Conn. — The Connecticut U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Waterbury Police Department teamed up on Tuesday to arrest a man in Connecticut wanted for a sexual assault he allegedly committed in West Virginia in May 2000, according to a release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Fifty-year-old Waterbury resident Tyron Jermaine Walker was taken into custody; he is charged in Westover, W. Va. with second-degree sexual assault, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

The release said that on May 23, 2000, a victim reported a sexual assault to the Westover Police Department. No suspect was identified at the time, but DNA evidence was entered into a national database.

California authorities alerted the Westover Police Department on Jan. 26, 2021, that their DNA evidence was connected to an offender in the CODIS database who was also considered a suspect in a sexual assault case in Montana, U.S. Marshals said. Walker was named as the suspect.

According to the release, on June 30, 2023, a Monongalia County, W. Va. Magistrate court issued an arrest warrant for Walker, and the assistance of the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force was requested following the issuance of the warrant.

U.S. Marshals said their investigation led them to a home in the 2600 block of South Main Street in Waterbury, where Walker was arrested Tuesday morning. He was taken into custody, charged as a fugitive from justice and is being held pending extradition to West Virginia to face the charges against him, the release said.

The case was part of the West Virginia Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, which the release said is funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

“The Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases,” the release said.
