NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Central Connecticut State University made an exciting announcement on Monday, as it is now accepting students into its newly established College of Health and Rehabilitation Services.

According to a release from the university, the college is now home to CCSU’s health sciences departments, including Nursing, Physical Education and Human Performance, as well as human service disciplines such as counseling and social work.

“The new college provides the exciting opportunity to foster stronger collaborations between departments and create innovative academic programs that will be interdisciplinary involving multiple schools and colleges at Central,” CCSU President Zulma Toro said in the release.

Toro added that the creation of the new college provides excellent experiential learning opportunities for students who will be able to serve the community in new ways.

The release said that students will gain valuable professional experience through the college’s associated student-run community clinic in Copernicus Hall. The clinic opened last fall and offers free health care services to members of the university community and residents of greater New Britain on a weekly basis.

The university announced that Dr. Jayanthi Kandiah is the inaugural dean for the new college. She was selected after a national search, according to the release.

“At Central’s College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the opportunities are limitless,” Kandiah said, in the release. “By fostering collaborations, the college will reach academic excellence, advance scholarship and deliver state-of-the-art patient-centered care, preparing our talented students to become exemplary healthcare professionals dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all.”

The release said the implementation of the new college won approval from the state’s Board of Regents for Higher Education last December. New Britain Mayor Regent Erin Stewart, a CCSU graduate, complimented the university’s unique approach to bringing the program to fruition and making the college a reality.

In the release, Stewart said that a city like New Britain, which is home to multiple hospitals, can only benefit from a “pipeline” of students with healthcare experience and credentials.

The release notes that the College of Health and Rehabilitation Services will bring together the academic departments of Nursing, Social Work, Nurse Anesthesia Practice, Physical Education/Human Performance and Counselor Education.

On Monday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned to celebrate the new college.
