According to the release, McLachlan also founded the Lilith Fair Tour, which offered a platform for female musicians and united over 2,000,000 people during its three-year run. Lilith Fair also raised more than $7 million for local and national women’s charities and was the most successful all-female music event, launching the careers of multiple performers, the release said.

For her efforts with Lilith Fair, McLachlan received the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary Award for furthering the careers of women in the music industry. The release said she is an Officer of the Order of Canada, was appointed to the Order of British Columbia and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards for Lifetime Achievement.

The singer-songwriter founded The Sarah McLachlan Foundation in 2002; it funds the nonprofit Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which provides high quality music education and mentorship to children and youth that are working to overcome obstacles to access in the industry.

“From an early age, music provided Sarah with the tools she needed to navigate the challenges she faced in her life, so she recognizes how important it is for every child to have those same opportunities,” the release said.
