CONNECTICUT, USA — Big Y, a supermarket chain in Connecticut and Massachusetts, has been named a “Best-in-State Employer” for 2024 by Forbes, an American media company with a focus on business and finance.
This is the sixth consecutive year that Big Y has earned the distinction from Forbes, which recognizes Best-in-State employers across all industries by using an independent survey of employees who anonymously recommend their employer from the award.
Big Y announced on Tuesday that it was selected, noting that the chain has no knowledge of which employees are polled and lacks the ability to influence the results in any way.
Forbes said employees are asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and families. Employees are also asked to give opinions on a series of statements regarding work-related topics, including working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image.
Big Y said its award spans 25 different industries. Michael D’Amour, Big Y’s president and CEO, said the chain is grateful to receive the award for the sixth year in a row.
“This achievement reflects the unwavering passion of every member of our caring Big Y family for serving our customers and local communities,” D’Amour said. “We are extremely proud of our over 10,000 employees and are honored to share this recognition with each of them.”
According to Big Y, the chain puts a strong emphasis on employee experience and feedback. It focuses on flexibility, overall recognition, work/life balance and fostering a culture of caring and inclusion.
Big Y employees engage in roundtables, focus groups, resource groups, and the chain conducts frequent surveys to solicit feedback, which goes toward improving the work environment.
“Receiving this award highlights the importance of hearing and responding to every employee’s voice,” Big Y said in a statement. “Through these efforts, all are encouraged to share ideas and collaborate with one another.”
Big Y noted that it has also been named among Forbes Best-in-State for Diversity, Forbes Best Employers for Women and Forbes America’s Best Large Employers.
Big Y has maintained a strong presence in Connecticut and Massachusetts since being founded in Chicopee, Mass. in 1936; it was originally named after an intersection in Chicopee where two roads converge into a “Y.”
Today, Big Y employs more than 10,000 people.
