Connecticut DOT aims to improve transportation equity through new survey

Participants of the Connecticut Daily Travel Survey will be selected at random and will have the option to answer questions online, over the phone or through an app.

CONNECTICUT, USA — The Connecticut Department of Transportation wants public input on the state’s transportation system.

CTDOT has launched the Connecticut Daily Travel Survey to “better understand the transportation needs of Connecticut residents.” Selected participants will be notified via mail. If they choose to participate, they will answer questions about their day-to-day travel habits, including their mode of transportation, where they go and why.

People around Connecticut gave their thoughts on the current transportation system, including what travel is like on the highways and roadways.

“Jumping from the Merritt to 691 is a nightmare because there’s always car accidents,” said Tara Goyette of Southington.

“The roads need a little improvement. They’re very bumpy, and a lot of potholes,” said Pittsburgh native Teresa Doman, who often travels through Connecticut in an RV.

Ben Marak of Southington said he would like to see more accessibility on walkways throughout the state.

“Maybe get the sidewalks fixed up a little bit,” said Marak.

CTDOT is welcoming the feedback, stating that the goal is to get a more “complete picture of regional transportation patterns to better plan for future improvements.” Survey participants will be selected at random and asked about their daily travel habits, including where they go, how they get there and why.

“[I] visit family and I take public transportation of course,” said Tash Tabassum. “It’s always been a pleasure. it’s normal. it’s not overwhelming,” she added.

Some residents said they fully support CTDOT’s efforts to include them in the improvement process.

“They’re not just hearing it from one person, they’re hearing it from a bunch of different people,” said Marak.

“I would totally do that. I mean the whole reason why I love it here is that we have walkability and it’s easy to hop on a trail and go. I love the one way. I wish more towns had the one-way grains,” added Goyette.

Out-of-staters pointed to reckless driving they have noticed while traveling on Interstate 84.

“They’re just trying to weave in and out of it. it was just crazy, never seen anything like it. Not even in Pittsburgh,” said Robin Campieri & Teresa Doman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Though travelers weren’t shy about what improvements they would suggest if selected, most said they are generally content with how they get around here in Connecticut.

“I would say pretty good and they’re always working on improving it so I think that’s a good thing,” said Goyette.

The survey results are expected to be released sometime next spring.
