BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Bridgeport Public Schools has announced that a new program is teaching energy conservation to fourth and fifth grade students at Luis Muñoz Marín and Geraldine Johnson Elementary Schools.
A release issued Friday says that a partnership between the district and the Sponsors of Energize Connecticut - Avangrid, Inc. subsidiaries United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas - has brought the program to life.
The initiative is led by Jorge Garcia, chief operating officer of the district's Public Facilities Department, and aims to strengthen hands-on learning and promote sustainable practices.
According to the district, students who joined the Lighthouse After-School Program were recently able to build model homes and explore practical ways to save energy. The program will wrap up with a final event in January at the Discovery Interdistrict Magnet School.
There, parents and families will be invited to help create model homes. The event will also include guest speakers, access to the whole museum there, a raffle with various prizes and food prepared by the team at the Nutrition Center.
Garcia thanked Energize Connecticut sponsors, United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas, for their support.
“This initiative not only teaches students the importance of saving energy but also gives them the ability to showcase various energy conservation efforts within the district, providing valuable hands-on experiences,” Garcia said.
In the release, the district acknowledged ongoing budget challenges but promised that a commitment to finding opportunities for students to collaborate with community partners exists.
“We are dedicated to ensuring our students remain the top priority,” Acting Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery said. “Every student deserves an outstanding education.”
Parents and families are welcome to attend the final event next month to celebrate the students’ accomplishments and view the exhibits.
The initiative is designed to equip students with essential skills in energy conservation and environmental stewardship.
