Bloomfield, Windsor high schools cleared after lockdowns

Bloomfield police believe a student boasted about having a gun and hoaxed fellow students. It is currently unclear what prompted the lockdown in Windsor.

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. — Bloomfield High School and Windsor High School were cleared and everyone is safe after they went under lockdowns around the same time Thursday afternoon.

According to Bloomfield police, officers were called to the town's high school after receiving a report of a student with a gun.

After making contact with the student in question, police said officers determined that they did not have a gun or weapon on them.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the student "boasted" about having a gun and "hoaxed" students.

Bloomfield police, a K9, and school security searched the school and did not find a firearm. The school was deemed clear at 2:15 p.m. and the students were released after the lockdown was lifted.

Bloomfield police said they would "investigate the matter."

Windsor police did not immediately respond to a request for information on what prompted the lockdown at their town's high school.

Families during the lockdowns said they left work early to pick up their child from school and expressed frustration that it took 90 minutes for school officials to alert them about the police activity on campus.

“Just hearing yesterday about the school shooting in Georgia and now this... that's why I rushed over here,” mother Kesha Manson said. “I think they could have done better with communicating with parents. to find out hours later, that's what angers me."

Many parents said they were thankful to communicate with their students over text.

“If my kids didn't have their cell phones, I would not have known,” Manson said.

"It gives us peace of mind to know that our kids are okay. Sometimes just hearing your child's voice can get you through cause just standing around and not knowing what's going on... you panic,” Breanna Hartfield said.

Christina Loney, who was in the school's front office at the time the reported threat occurred, has a different perspective.

“It was scary, but I thought the administration dealt with it in a timely manner and got everyone to safety,” Loney said.
