2 arrested in connection to 2-year-old’s death in Bristol: Police

Luis Dejesus, 24, and Alyjah Almodovar, 21, were taken into custody this week and face multiple charges stemming from the physical abuse of a child.

BRISTOL, Connecticut — Two people were arrested in Bristol this week for the death of a two-year-old child in January, according to a release from Bristol police on Friday.

On Jan. 9, Bristol police were called to a city residence for the report of a child who had fallen down a flight of stairs and was unresponsive.

The responding officers performed CPR, police said. Bristol EMS arrived on scene and took the child to Bristol Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

“Responding officers noticed a significant amount of abnormal injuries on the child while performing CPR. The Bristol Police Criminal Investigations Division was called to the scene, and further investigation commenced,” Bristol Police Det. Ryan Kulig said, in the release.

Investigators later determined that the child did not fall down a flight of stairs, police said. Instead, the child was a victim of physical abuse "over a period of time", which ultimately lead to the child’s death, according to police.

On Monday, Alyjah Almodovar, 21, was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a child and intentional cruelty to persons. Police said she was held on a court-set $100,000 bond.

On Friday, police arrested Luis Dejesus, 23. He faces charges including first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, risk of injury to a child, intentional cruelty to persons, and false statements. He was held on a court-set $1 million bond, according to police.

Police said that at the time of his arrest, Dejesus was already in the custody of the Department of Corrections on charges stemming from a different Bristol police investigation with charges pertaining to illegal firearms and narcotics possession.

Police did not say what the relationship was between the two suspects and the child victim. FOX61 News has asked for clarification, but has not yet gotten a response.
