Simsbury residents continue to clean up after Friday's storms

Crews worked through the day on Saturday to restore power to residents and continue cleaning up what the storm left behind.

SIMSBURY, Conn. — Residents in the northern section of Simsbury continue to pick up the pieces after Friday’s storm left hundreds of downed trees, causing many power outages in the area.

Crews worked throughout the day Saturday to restore power and begin cleaning up what was left behind.

Joe Fahan and his wife were outside moments before the wind picked up.

“It felt nice and cool, so we both came out to sit on the front porch, but then it started to rain, and we decided to go back in because we were getting wet, and by the time we got back in the house and closed the door… five seconds later all the trees were down on our front yard,” said Fahan.

Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis spent Saturday morning surveying the damage with state Rep. Melissa Osborne and Congresswoman Jahana Hayes among others.

“It was pretty much devasting.... Every house had trees down, some on top of the houses, some into a bedroom, some on powerlines. People's backyards were covered with trees, sheds were covered, cars are covered. It was shocking to see so much devastation,” said Mackstutis.

The town opened the library as a cooling center Saturday for those without power. By Saturday night, most of the area had power restored.

Gov. Ned Lamont called town leaders Saturday to see how the state could help. He offered state trucks to clear debris, as the town seeks federal disaster funds to help with the cleanup.

The damage is believed to have been caused by a microburst.
