EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — A Vernon man faces charges after he drove the wrong way on Interstate 84 while under the influence, state police said.

Officials said Troop H received multiple 911 calls reporting a wrong-way driver on the highway near Exit 50 in Hartford

Callers stated that the car, a BMW, was driving eastbound on the westbound side. State police continued to get reports of the wrong-way driver as troopers were on their way to the area. The car had continued traveling and was now driving the wrong way in the HOV lane near Exit 58 in East Hartford.

The driver, later identified as 61-year-old Andrey Kamenskiy, eventually stopped in a construction zone and was speaking with the construction crew on site. According to state police, ten workers were part of the crew.

One of the responding troopers saw a blue BMW facing the wrong way within a construction zone and Kamenskiy, who was standing outside.

Once at the scene, the trooper approached Kamenskiy, who provided state police with his name and identification.

Officials said Kamenskiy was "exhibiting signs of impairment" and he willingly underwent a field sobriety test, which he ultimately failed.

State police said no crashes or injuries were reported during the incident.

Kamenskiy was taken into custody and charged with ten counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, and 10 counts of endangering highway workers in a work zone.

Kamenskiy was released on a $25,000 bond and is due in court on Aug. 30.
