HARTFORD, Conn. — A construction worker died Wednesday after being hit by a car in Hartford, the city's police department said.
According to Hartford police, the area of West Boulevard at South Whitney Street was closed after a crash that happened at 12:12 p.m.
Based on preliminary information, police said they determined the car was headed west on West Boulevard at a high speed when it went through a construction site staffed by a private contractor that had a trench in the roadway and hit a worker.
The worker, identified Jose Diaz-Nieves, 54, of East Hartford, died at the scene, according to police.
The car had also hit some equipment and a dump truck at the construction scene, police said.
The driver of the car, identified as Tommy Nguyen, 25, of Hartford, was detained and arrested by police, and two other people inside the vehicle were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Nguyen is facing charges of manslaughter in the second degree, reckless driving, risk of injury to a minor, operating without insurance, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating with a suspended license, failure to use child safety seat and improper use of a marker plate. Police said he was held on a $1 million bond.
The Hartford Police Crime Scene Division is leading the investigation, according to police.
