HARTFORD, Conn. — A Hartford Superior Court jury found a man guilty of murder after a fatal shooting in Hartford in April 2021, according to the state's Division of Criminal Justice Monday.
Daniel Lopez, 33, of Hartford was found guilty of murder, along with two counts of criminal possession of a firearm/ammunition. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 31, 2025 in Hartford Superior Court.
Citing evidence from the trial, the DCJ said police went to Babcock Street in Hartford for a report of a shooting on April 14, 2021.
Officers found Heriberto Garcia, 31, of Hartford, with a single gunshot wound to the chest, the DCJ said. An ambulance brought him to Hartford Hospital where he died of his injuries.
A witness identified the shooter as Lopez and told police that they saw the victim in the front passenger seat and Lopez in the rear seat behind him.
Lopez was holding Garcia in a headlock from behind when the witness told police that he heard a gunshot and saw "the flash of a gun," the DCJ said. The witness then attempted to provide aid as Garcia fell forward in the car.
Lopez got out of the car and threatened to shoot the witness before fleeing the scene, the DCJ said. The witness then called 911 to report the incident.
