HARTFORD, Conn. — A citizen of El Salvador who was previously deported from the United States was sentenced to prison in Hartford federal court on Wednesday for illegally reentering the country, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Forty-three-year-old Fredy Adalberto Guardado Salgado, who also goes by “Fredy Guardado” and “Fredy Salgado,” was sentenced to 15 months in prison for illegally reentering the U.S. after being deported.
Court documents and statements made in court note that Guardado was deported from the U.S. to El Salvador after being convicted of a felony in December 2010 in Connecticut Superior Court. He was convicted of second-degree assault involving a stabbing, prosecutors said.
Guardado illegally reentered the U.S. and was arrested by Hamden police on Aug. 6, 2023, on state assault and breach of peace charges; he was accused of striking several victims in the head using a wooden bat, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors note that Guardado pleaded guilty to illegal reentry on June 28, and the state charges against him are pending in Meriden Superior Court. Guardado is currently detained in federal custody.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations investigated the case.
