HARTFORD, Conn. — The late Det. Robert "Bobby" Garten will be honored at the Hartford Yard Goats' opening day game, his sister-in-law, Kimber Garten, announced Monday.
The Yard Goats' first game of the season on April 9 will pay tribute to Garten with a ceremonial pitch from his family and the family of his partner Brian Kearney, Kimber Garten said.
Bobby Garten's nephew, Liam Garten, will sing the National Anthem, according to Kimber Garten.
The eight-year Hartford police veteran was killed on Sept. 6, 2023 when 18-year-old Richard Barrington allegedly crashed a car into Bobby Garten and Kearney's cruiser while driving off from a traffic stop by other city officers.
Kimber Garten said that one of the things her brother-in-law loved most was going to Yard Goats games.
The Yard Goats announced earlier in March that the team would be accepting applications for a new scholarship in honor of Bobby Garten. The award, funded by The Detective Robert "Bobby" Garten Memorial Fund, will be given to a student in the Greater Hartford Area pursuing education in law enforcement, according to the description.
