HARTFORD, Conn. — A Hartford man has been charged in the deadly hit-and-run that killed a toddler last month, police said. On Monday, Melvin Daniels appeared in Hartford Superior Court.
The crash happened June 3 just before 11 p.m. Officials said one-year-old Camila Elizabeth Ramirez-Carcamo had run out of a laundromat on New Britain Avenue when she was hit by a vehicle.
Police at the scene found Camila unresponsive in the roadway and no vehicle in sight. The toddler was rushed to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
Officials said that the car that struck the girl had driven off from the scene before officers got there. Police said the suspect vehicle, a BMW 328xi, was later found in New Haven in the early morning hours of June 4.
After an investigation by Hartford Police Crime Scene Division, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for 30-year-old Melvin Daniels. Police said Daniels turned himself in Monday, and he was charged with second-degree manslaughter, evading responsibility involving death, and having an illegally tinted windshield.
Atty. Hillary Carpenter, the public defender for Daniels, said in court, “Mr. Daniels reports to our office that he is a high school graduate with some community college including business certification. He works as a mental illness advisor in the town of New Hartford. His family is here to support him and he has a very limited record. I would ask the court to entertain a bond in the amount of $100,000."
The judge set Edward’s bond at $300,000 citing a past conviction for failure to appear in court. He's also been convicted of disorderly conduct. He is due back in court on July 15.
The investigation into the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with any additional information is asked to call the Hartford Police Department line at 860-722-TIPS (8477).
