HARTFORD, Conn. — A 16-year-old girl is in the hospital after she was injured during a shooting overnight, according to Hartford police. The 18-year-old accused in the attack was arrested and faced a judge.
Police were called to a part of the city for a report of a shooting around 12:38 a.m. Tuesday, and found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to an area hospital where she is in critical but stable condition, police said.
Investigators found the shooting suspect on Tuesday evening and took him into police custody. Jayzon Gunter, 18, of Hartford, was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, criminal attempt strangulation, unlawful discharge of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit. Bond was set to $2 million. Gunter was arraigned in court Wednesday.
Police said that the shooting is believed to be domestic-related.
The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) said they were "shocked" by the attack.
"It is an absolute tragedy for children of this age to already be experiencing the epitome of an unhealthy, abusive relationship. Our thoughts are with her and her family and friends as she recovers," the CCADV said in a statement.
Safe Connecticut is available 24/7 to those questioning their relationship or a relationship a loved one is in.
The shooting is under investigation. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Hartford Police Dept. Tip Line at 860-722-8477.
