HARTFORD, Conn. — If you saw a house driving down a Hartford street Thursday morning, you weren't hallucinating. In fact, four different homes were picked up from their foundations and driven to new homes elsewhere in the city.
The project was part of a larger expansion of Connecticut Children's Medical Center, which will revolve around a new parking structure on Lincoln Street that connects to a new patient tower at the hospital. The parking structure will also host retail spaces and space for other businesses. The whole project carries a $60 million price tag.
The engineering firm Fuss and O'Neill, which was hired by the hospital to oversee the expansion project, says that the decision to move the homes was made in an effort to preserve them.
The whole ordeal required several streets in downtown Hartford to shut down to some traffic, all parking, and electrical utilities for a few hours Thursday morning. It also caused some snarled traffic through parts of Frog Hollow and Barry Square.
Ultimately, the houses found their new homes in other parts of Hartford. One on Lawrence Street, one on Hungerford Street, and two on Putnam Street.
