HARTFORD, Conn. — A man was arrested on child pornography charges Tuesday by local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, according to the Hartford Police Department.
Marvyn Escobar, 26, of Hartford, is charged with federal criminal violations including transfer of obscene material to a minor and receipt of child pornography.
According to police, an investigation was opened into Escobar for "child pornography offenses" in December 2023 by the Hartford Police Special Investigations Division in collaboration with the FBI's Crimes Against Children/Human Trafficking Task Force.
According to a federal affidavit, Escobar had been arrested in 2020 for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old, but in 2023 agreed to plead guilty to Risk of Injury to a Minor and received a 5-year suspended sentence. The affidavit also says that the day before he was sentenced in 2023, he began communicating with another 13-year-old, in California, over the online chat service Discord.
Investigators say that Escobar soon began sending pornographic images to the child and manipulated her into sending nude pictures of herself, which prompted her to consider suicide. When her mother found out, she told police in California, and the multi-agency investigation began.
After investigators found probable cause to charge Escobar with violations relating to child pornography, police said a federal judge approved an arrest warrant on June 21.
Escobar was placed into custody by Special Investigations Detectives and task force agents on June 25, and was later charged and held in federal custody, police said.
