A new grocery store in Hartford will offer income-based discounts

Grocery on Broad is the first of its kind in Hartford and a much needed resource for the city, which has been without a proper grocery store for some time.

HARTFORD, Conn. — A new grocery store located in the Frog Hollow area of Hartford, offering fresh and affordable food, will be open Thursday.

Grocery on Broad is an enterprise partnership between Forge City Works and Connecticut Foodshare.

“We've made produce front and center,” said Ben Dubow, executive director of Grocery on Broad.  “…but we have meat, we have fish, we have dairy, we have cheeses, and then the grocery items that we have are really the ones that you need to cook."

Customers who shop at the store can sign up to be a member, giving them an automatic 3% discount, but larger discounts are given to members based on their annual household income.

“We're using a means tested sliding scale pricing model, which simply means that based on your income, people will pay different amounts,” said Dubow.

For example, a family of four making a annual household income of $90,000 or less will qualify for a 25%-off discount, and if that income is less than $67,500, customers can qualify for 50% off groceries.
The store will also double SNAP benefits for those using them on fresh produce.

The store is not only a resource to combat food insecurity in the capital city, but will also help teens with job skills.

“This will get integrated in with our job training program, particularly focused on disengaged and at-risk youth kind of a first employment opportunity. Learn soft skills and hard skills, all that are transferable,” said Dubow.
