HARTFORD, Conn. — A one-and-a-half-year-old is dead after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Hartford, police said.
Hartford officers were called to the area of a laundromat on New Britain Avenue just before 11 p.m. Monday on several reports that a toddler was hit by a car.
When first responders got to the scene, they found the girl unresponsive in the roadway. She was rushed to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Police identified the child Tuesday as Camila Elizabeth Ramirez-Carcamo of Hartford.
Police said the toddler reportedly wandered out of the open door of the laundromat and into the road. The car that struck her fled the area, heading westbound on New Britain Avenue.
"I can't imagine not knowing that you hit something," Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department said.
Officials said the suspect vehicle was a 2013 black BMW 328xi with Connecticut plates, which was found "occupied" in New Haven later in the morning.
A suspect has been identified in this investigation, police said. Investigators seized the car for processing.
Rosa Rivera, a Hartford mother and grandmother, said she has seen drivers speed down New Britain Avenue without much thought.
"I always tell my daughter there's traffic," Rivera said. "It's too much. People drive through here without any consideration that there could be kids around here."
The state Dept. of Children and Families confirmed it is involved in this investigation.
"Our thoughts are with this baby's family during this extremely difficult and emotional time," DCF spokesperson Peter Yazbak told FOX61 in a statement. "We can confirm the Department did receive a report yesterday. We are working with the Hartford PD to investigate this tragic incident along with offering trauma informed supports to the family."
Hartford Police Crime Scene Division is investigating the fatal hit-and-run. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hartford Police Tip Line at 860-722-TIPS (8477).
