EAST GRANBY, Conn. — The Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine has ignited more than 350 plastic jack-‘o-lanterns for the third season of “Light into the Dungeon."
The show uses the drab, eerie charm of the centuries-old prison with the bright orange energy of the pumpkins that are placed around about 100 yards of subterranean pathways.
“You’re removing yourself from society above and descending into a whole other world down here," said Morgan Bengel, the curator at the Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine.
Bengel has a team of volunteers that help with the set up.
“It’s really immersive, we are backlighting spaces where we have the jack-‘o-lanterns," she added. "We spend a lot of time down here and this really brings the energy to this space.”
Some of the plastic pumpkins showcased at "Light into the Dungeon" are 75 feet beneath the ground level where it’s always 52 degrees.
“The copper mine which served as a prison during the American Revolution -- it’s got a really dark, deep, complicated history, people love to be here for Halloween.” Bengel said. “We want to celebrate the [Halloween] season, and we invite families to be here with our jack-‘o-lanterns.”
"Light into the Dungeon," a jack-‘o-lantern experience, runs through Oct. 27. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 17 and under. Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine is open for "Light into the Dungeon" on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
