4 people displaced after Manchester fire caused by lightning strike

Two firefighters were injured, including one taken to the hospital. The fire was brought under control at 7:22 p.m., and the Red Cross is assisting those displaced.

MANCHESTER, Conn. — Two adults and two children are displaced after a house fire in Manchester Saturday evening that left two firefighters injured.

According to the Manchester Fire Department, which received multiple calls, firefighters were dispatched at 6:40 p.m. to a house on Oak Street and arrived on scene within two minutes. The building that caught fire is a two-and-a-half story, two-family structure. One apartment was vacant, and under renovation.

The fire department said that one caller made a report of a lightning strike, which they determined to be the cause of the fire.

“First arriving units reported heavy fire showing from the second floor and attic space,” the fire department said.

The first companies to arrive on scene secured the water supply and began an interior fire attack, according to the release. Primary searches indicated that all residents escaped the structure.

Firefighters battled the blaze by using an “aggressive application of multiple interior hose lines coupled with personnel venting the roof to allow for access to the attic space to control the fire,” the release said, noting that interior partition walls in the attic space hindered the attack lane access.

Ultimately, the fire was brought under control at 7:22 p.m., the fire department said.

All four occupants are displaced, and the Red Cross arrived to provide them with assistance. Two firefighters were injured, including one who was taken to a hospital.

“The Fire Marshal’s cause and origin investigation is underway at this time,” the fire department said.
