NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — A collaboration between community organizations and their business partners resulted in the distribution of food and essentials to nearly 400 New Britain families on Wednesday.
According to a release from Price Rite Marketplace, the supermarket retailer teamed up with the hunger-fighting charity Feed the Children, the Boys & Girls Club of New Britain and Frito-Lay to make the donations.
Price Rite says the event was part of its annual “Feeding Minds & Bodies” campaign in partnership with Feed the Children, which aims to support families experiencing food insecurity. According to Price Rite, 2024 marks 10 years of joining forces with Feed the Children.
Before the event, the Boys & Girls Club of New Britain pre-identified families from the city. Each family received a 25-pound box of food, a 15-pound box of personal care items, backpacks stuffed with school supplies, Price Rite gift cards and other assorted items courtesy of Price Rite and Feed the Children.
Local community members and political figures joined the effort by volunteering.
“Our Feeding Minds & Bodies program is one of the many ways Price Rite Marketplace serves its communities,” Price Rite Marketplace President Kevin McDonnell said. “We are excited to celebrate our 10th year in partnership with Feed the Children and work with the Boys & Girls Club to provide resources to children and families in need in 10 cities.”
The initiative is designed to bring attention to and fight the issue of childhood hunger.
This year, Price Rite and Feed the Children are partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of America to give food, personal care items and school supplies to children who need them.
According to the retailer, one in five children in the U.S. experience food insecurity and that hunger remains a serious issue in many communities, particularly during the summer months and the back-to-school season.
“Children cannot thrive unless their basic needs are met,” Feed the Children CEO and President Travis Arnold said. “A widespread issue like childhood hunger will only be solved when enough people work together. Partners like Price Rite, Frito-Lay and the Boys & Girls Club of New Britain are vital to our mission as we serve vulnerable communities.”
