New Britain considering metal detectors in schools

The town will be holding a community forum on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. in the New Britain High School Lecture Hall.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Consolidated School District of New Britain is surveying residents about the possible installation of metal detectors in schools before a town hall on Tuesday.

The school district said in a Facebook post that they are asking for residents' input on what "metal/weapons detection technology" would look like and how it would function if installed in the schools.

The town will be holding a community forum on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. in the New Britain High School Lecture Hall to discuss the possible installation of the technology. Residents can RSVP here.

Ahead of the forum, residents can complete the school district's online survey here.

Anyone looking to contact the town's Board of Education about the survey or forum can do so via their email boe@csdnb.org.

On Sept. 23, a phone call claiming an armed person was inside Vance Elementary School in New Britain forced the school to shelter in place and prompted police to surround the school with guns drawn.

A search of the building found no threat, no weapon and no intruder, according to school officials.

New Britain Superintendent Dr. Tony Gasper said in a statement after the incident that "the safety of our students and staff is our top priority" and that the community "must acknowledge the toll that these repeated incidents are having on our students, staff and families."

"It is imperative that we work as a community, state, and nation to address the root causes and put an end to these threats to our schools," he noted.

On Sept. 26, police said they arrested a 13-year-old in connection to making social media threats targeting Pulaski Middle School.

Various Connecticut schools since the beginning of fall have seen threats of violence, prompting lockdowns, closures, increased police presence and subsequent arrests.
