NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — New Britain's Polish restaurant Staropolska is closing its doors permanently after 30 years in business, according to a post on their Facebook page.
"To our many friends and loyal customers," the post said. "'All good things must come to an end.' It is with a heavy heart that we share with you that after 30 years of culinary creativity, we have decided not to re-open the Staropolska restaurant."
According to the post, the Broad Street restaurant had a fire in its basement on Sept. 19, 2023, and was unable to come to an agreement with the property owner to have the building "properly restored." They have since decided not to reopen the restaurant.
"The decision did not come easy," the post said. "After thinking long and hard and weighing out all our options - after 30 years - it is time to retire. We would like to say goodbye and thank everyone who has supported us over the years. To all our friends and customers that saw us evolve from a tiny place with only five tables, to our 'big move' in 2001, thank you for sticking with us."
According to its website, Staropolska specialized in Polish cuisine with dishes using "time tested, family recipes." They made the list for top 10 restaurants in New Britain on Culture Trip and were given the title of "Best Polish Food" on Thrillist, noting traditional dishes such as the stuffed cabbage and hunter's stew, as well as the Polish platter, consisting of "gołąbki, kiełbasa, bigos, pierogi, and a potato pancake."
The restaurant's website also highlights acclaim from the New York Times for their "bargain-basement pricing" and "welcoming charm."
