SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — Police are investigating a smash-and-grab burglary at a smoke shop after a car drove into the building Monday morning in Southington, the town's police department said.
Officers arrived at the Land Smoke Shop on West Street at 4:20 a.m. after receiving a report of an activated burglar alarm, police said.
Significant damage was found to the shop, including shattered glass from the door and windows, and scattered merchandise after shelves were knocked over, police said. Three trash-like containers with items from the smoke shop were also found spread across the parking lot.
Officers determined that the damage was caused by a car that drove through the building, police said. It was no longer on the scene by the time police arrived.
Police said they obtained video evidence of a dark-colored car driving in reverse into the front of the building, smashing through the front door. Multiple suspects were seen getting out of the car, filling trash cans and bags with merchandise from inside the store, and then leaving the building through the front.
The total amount that the store lost is currently unknown, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Massarelli at 860-378-1643.
