WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. — Connecticut is set to participate in the largest fundraising and awareness event across the U.S. and Canada for children with apraxia of speech, an event spokesperson said.

The 2024 Connecticut Walk for Apraxia event will be held at the New England Air Museum on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m., with a ceremony at 11 a.m. Registration is free and can be done on their website here.

According to the spokesperson, childhood apraxia of speech, or CAS, is a "rare motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for an individual to speak."

"Treatment includes intense speech therapy and sometimes other therapies to help an individual reach their highest communication ability, but there is no cure," the spokesperson said. "Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities at large can help children with apraxia thrive. Increased collective awareness means that children will be diagnosed faster, resulting in better, earlier intervention."

The event raises funds to benefit Apraxia Kids, a nonprofit organization that educates and supports the families of and speech-language professionals involved in the lives of children with CAS. More information about the nonprofit can be found here.

Along with a short group walk and a ceremony, the spokesperson said those at the event will be able to participate in "family-friendly activities."

A full list of communities across the U.S. and Canada participating in the event can be found on this webpage.
