CONNECTICUT, USA — Storms blew through Connecticut on Wednesday night, and strong winds toppled trees onto roads, wires, and a home in Windsor.
The tree came down on the home just before 10:30 p.m., trapping a 3-year-old in his bedroom, according to his mother.
Windsor Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Savelli said they received the report that the child was trapped in the bedroom on the second floor but that the parents managed to get him out without any injuries.
"We were going to bed, and I heard a loud boom, and I heard glass crash," the mother said outside the home. "And then I heard my son crying. Then I went to his room and took the ceiling off of him."
Savelli said that the house will likely be ruled uninhabitable by building inspectors who will assess the damage.
"The parents got the 3-year-old out of the room; we got everybody out of the house," Savelli said.
Savelli said the storms left debris across the town but nothing that prompted the fire department to respond. However, officials were also investigating the report of a possible lightning strike at home in the northern part of town.
Bradley International Airport saw a peak gust of 77 miles an hour, and the Danielson section of Killingly saw gusts up to 75 miles an hour.
With the downed trees, the Connecticut Department of Transportation reported road closures across the state:
- Route 183 in Torrington was closed at West Peral Road and in Winchester at Stadler Heights due to a tree down on wires.
- Route 10 in Granby is closed between Floydville Road and Spring Glen Drive.
- Route 202 in New Hartford is closed at Cedar Lane due to a traffic signal down.
- Route 7 is closed in Kent at Bulls Bridge Road due to a tree down in wires.
- Route 83 is closed at Spring Street in Manchester.
- Route 4 in Burlington is closed at Punch Brook Road for a tree down on wires.
As of 8:30 a.m., Eversource is reporting 49,013 outages across the state.
Weather-wise, Thursday will be dry with falling humidity as we head into Friday.
