CROMWELL, Conn. — Officials said three people were injured and two taken to the hospital after a lightning strike at TPC River Highlands Saturday afternoon.
Cromwell police received reports just before 4:30 p.m. that there was a lightning strike near the 5th hole at the golf course and that multiple people were injured. The Travelers Championship golf tournament was underway on Saturday before the storms hit.
When first responders got to the scene, they found that a tree had been struck by lightning and that three people were injured.
Two of the injured were conscious and alert. They were taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment and evaluation, while the third person refused treatment, according to police.
Saturday afternoon saw strong storms, including a tornado warning for parts of Connecticut and a severe thunderstorm warning for other parts of the state.
The Travelers Championship has been underway since Wednesday, and spectators, along with players, have had to battle soaring temperatures, humidity, and storms on Friday.
There is also a forecast for some thunderstorms on Sunday as well.
