PLAINVILLE, Conn — The Witch's Dungeon in Plainville is open year-round, but the museum always sets the stage for Halloween.
Every October, Cortlandt Hull, the museum's curator, prepares to welcome visitors from across the country. Hull, who was a Hollywood makeup artist and sculptor has a dazzling collection of movie keepsakes that showcase the golden age of horror films and renowned science fiction movies.
“You get to see original props that were actually used in the films, that bring you back to the era of the classic horror films,” he explains.
Frankenstein, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, all of those life-sized characters are on display at the Witch’s Dungeon.
“This is the 58th consecutive year that I’ve been doing this,” says Hull. “And we get people from all over the country who come and visit.”
Hull’s impressive collection continues to evolve, so each year something new shows up on display.
“This is unlike any Halloween attraction," he says. "It’s a tribute to the artists and the makeup artists as well as the actors that appeared in the classic horror films and science fiction films. It’s a journey back in time through movie history.”
During the Halloween season (9/14-11/03), The Witch’s Dungeon Classic Movie Museum is open for tours on Fridays (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.), Saturdays (3 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and Sundays (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.). Tours cost $15 for adults, $7 for kids. The tours usually last around 30-40 minutes.
