LITCHFIELD, Conn. — A Waterbury man who was driving under the influence while going the wrong way on Route 8 south in Litchfield Saturday was arrested, according to Connecticut State Police.
Darnell Tomlin, 40, of Waterbury, is facing charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, use of drug paraphernalia, sale of a narcotic substance, possession of a controlled substance, illegal possession of explosives, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm/ammunition and reckless endangerment in the first degree.
CSP said that Troop L in Litchfield received a report at 2:22 a.m. of a car that was going north on Route 8 south in the area of exit 40 in Litchfield.
A state police sergeant found the car, a white Kia Optima, driving erratically while going north in the southbound lanes of Route 8, according to CSP. The highway was shut down by exit 42 by troopers called to the area.
Tomlin, the driver of the Kia, was pulled over before the Exit 41 off ramp, CSP said. Showing signs of being under the influence, troopers said they brought him out of the car and found multiple alcoholic drinks along the driver's side door and floor.
CSP said that they also found a variety of items including "explosive materials or fireworks," an object resembling a gun, suspected narcotics, materials "consistent with those used to package narcotics for sale" and drug paraphernalia.
Tomlin was released on a $50,000 bond and is expected to appear at Torrington Court on June 28.
