WOODBURY, Conn. — A suspect is in police custody Thursday after stabbing a Woodbury police officer in the neck during a traffic stop, according to Connecticut State Police.
State police said the traffic stop was on North Main Street in Woodbury at 1:24 p.m. on Thursday.
After Woodbury Police Officer Tim Wright pulled a car over, state police said the driver started an altercation with the officer, stabbing him in the neck.
Wright called for backup as the suspect took off from the scene, according to state police. Another officer arrived and Tazed the suspect, taking him down and bringing him to a hospital.
The suspect is now in state police custody at Troop L. An update with information on charges is expected Friday. They have not been identified at this time.
Wright was taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries and is expected to be OK.
According to state police, Wright has spent 35 years in the force, serving in Waterbury and under state police as an officer in Woodbury.
State police said they also expect to eventually release body camera video of the incident.
There is no active threat to the public, state police said.
