WOODBURY, Conn. — A man is in police custody Thursday after stabbing a Woodbury police officer in the neck during a traffic stop, according to Connecticut State Police.
Tyler Wilmot, 31, of Woodbury, is facing charges of failure to display registration plate, illegible license plate, operating a motor vehicle without a license (subsequent offense), interfering with an officer/resisting, assault on a public safety officer, criminal attempt to commit murder and assault in the first degree.
Police are holding Wilmot on a $3 million bond set by the Waterbury State's Attorney's Office. He is expected to be arraigned at Waterbury Superior Court on Friday.
State police said the traffic stop was in the driveway of an apartment complex off of North Main Street in Woodbury at 1:24 p.m. on Thursday after a dark colored Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to properly display its registration plate.
After Woodbury Police Officer Tim Wright pulled the Jeep over, state police said the driver, identified as Wilmot, exited the vehicle and began approaching him.
Wright noted that Wilmot was "verbally aggressive" and refused to listen to verbal directions, state police said.
A physical altercation then took place with Wilmot allegedly stabbing Wright in the neck with a knife.
Wright called for backup as Wilmot took off from the scene, according to state police. Another officer arrived and Tased Wilmot to bring him under control and place him in handcuffs.
Wilmot was treated at a hospital and is now in state police custody at Troop L in Litchfield.
A Woodbury resident trooper sergeant brought Wright, who was in "immediate need for a higher level of medical care," to a hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
According to state police, Wright has spent 35 years on the force, serving in Waterbury and under state police as an officer in Woodbury.
State police said Wright's body camera was on, and video will be released pending the investigation.
There is no active threat to the public, state police said.
