GROTON, Conn. — A Groton man faces multiple charges after a disturbance on Sunday evening left multiple police officers injured, according to the Groton Police Department.
Micah Johnson, 41, of Groton, was arrested and charged with three counts of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and interfering with an officer, police say.
On Sept. 8 at approximately 7:42 p.m., the Groton Police Department’s Emergency Communications Center received several 911 calls from a residence on North Road. The male caller, who police identified as Micah Johnson, disconnected his calls prematurely multiple times. Police said yelling could be heard in the background of the calls.
According to police, additional reports informed dispatch that Johnson was acting erratically, had assaulted a female and reportedly possessed a knife. Johnson was found at the end of the driveway by numerous officers who responded to the scene.
Police said Johnson was armed but attempted running into traffic to stop cars; he appeared intoxicated and was extremely angry while making statements that didn’t make sense. Officers said that Johnson was sweating profusely and wearing a torn t-shirt.
By engaging Johnson in discussions, officers on scene de-escalated the situation, police said. Other officers also spoke with the people involved as well as witnesses and determined Johnson would be arrested for domestic violence-related charges.
Police said Johnson tensed up when he was told he would be arrested; he became agitated again and started walking away from officers toward his house. Johnson failed to comply with the officers’ commands, as the officers continued telling him to calm down.
When officers attempted to take Johnson into custody, police said he physically resisted and refused to follow their commands. Johnson was then taken to the ground by officers, and a physical struggle ensued, police said, adding that the prolonged physical struggle ended when Johnson was handcuffed.
According to police, three Groton Police Officers were injured during the struggle; one was treated at Pequot Health Center’s Emergency Room. That officer was released but remained out of work due to the injuries as of Tuesday afternoon. Police added that a second officer received significant cuts on both his knees, while another officer had cuts on his head, face, both knees and hands.
Johnson was taken to Groton Police Headquarters, where he was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond. Police said he was then taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for examination.
Johnson was arraigned in New London court on Monday. Police said the case remains under investigation. Anyone who may have information regarding the incident is asked to contact Groton police at 860-441-6712.
