MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. — Since 2007, Lyman Orchards has made sunflowers a main event at their Middlefield farm, and this year, it’s all about the Hartford Yard Goats.
The family farm is celebrating the popular farm team – the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies that plays at Dunkin' Park in Hartford.
John Lyman, the owner of Lyman Orchards said, “The theme this year is the Hartford Yard Goats. It’s an August activity with baseball and the Sunflower Maze.”
Two and half acres of the sunflowers were planted this year, and the design is the Yard Goats' logo. Lyman said the sunflower crop has been robust in 2024.
“It’s been a good growing season; we’ve had enough moisture. The heat might be a little tough on us, but the plants love it. They’ve been thriving.”
Lyman also said that beyond the beauty of the Sunflower Maze, there is something additionally bright about it – the charity aspect for Connecticut Children’s Hospital.
“We donate a dollar for every ticket sold to Connecticut Children’s and specifically their cancer and blood disorder unit, and we have been doing that since 2007. Entering this year, we are close to $200,000 that we have raised for them.”
Standing by the maze, Lyman added, “With the orchard in the background, it’s just a whole different setting, but it’s a lot of fun and it’s beautiful.”
This year, the Lyman Orchards Sunflower Maze stays open through Aug. 25. To learn more click here.
