HADDAM, Conn. — A five-year-old boy is in critical condition after a boating accident involving a kayak in Haddam Saturday, according to the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
DEEP Environmental Conservation Police said they responded at 3:15 p.m. to an accident involving two people on a kayak along the Connecticut River in the area of Depot Hill Road.
Connecticut State Police said the kayak reportedly capsized. A man and a five-year-old boy ended up in the water, according to DEEP.
The Haddam Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the area for a report of a child with "cardiac arrest post-drowning." They requested Life Star to land at the former Haddam Elementary School property before the child was brought to Middlesex Health via Haddam Volunteer Ambulance Service, Inc. with the Middlesex paramedic and Life Star crew.
DEEP said the boy was then taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center in critical condition. The man refused medical attention at the scene.
DEEP EnCon police are investigating the incident.
