EAST HAMPTON, Conn. — A Lebanon woman was arrested Wednesday after threatening to "shoot up" a school in East Hampton Tuesday, according to the town's police department.
Monica Smith, 57, of Lebanon, is facing charges of falsely reporting an incident concerning serious physical injury or death and misuse of the emergency 911 system.
Police clarified that Smith is not to be confused with a language teacher at East Hampton High School who shares the same name.
Smith was released after posting a $50,000 bond and is expected in Middletown Superior Court on Thursday. Police said she is banned from all East Hampton schools and will face additional charges if she enters school property.
On Tuesday at 12:47 p.m., police received a report about an active shooter outside East Hampton Middle School on Childs Road.
A "distraught" woman, later identified as Smith, was outside the school at the front entrance and told officers that there was an active shooter inside, police said.
While a police search was underway at the middle school under lockdown, officers received information about a possible shooter at the high school. The high school was also put into lockdown as officers searched that school as well.
Police said no active threat was found at either school, and the lockdowns were lifted.
Investigators spoke with multiple individuals Tuesday evening, according to police. The investigation continued Wednesday morning when police said they developed probable cause to believe that Smith was the person behind the threat.
