MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — A man was committed to a psychiatric hospital Tuesday after a deadly stabbing in Middletown in May of 2021, according to the state's Division of Criminal Justice.
Eugenio Vela III, 21, of Middletown, was committed by a three-judge panel to the jurisdiction of the Psychiatric Security Review Board for up to 30 years.
While it was found that he intentionally committed the crime of murder, the DCJ said he was found not guilty based on a conclusion that he "lacked substantial capacity, as a result of a mental disease or defect, either to appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct or control his behavior."
Citing evidence from the trial, the DCJ said that on May 20, 2021, Vela stabbed a woman more than 20 times in Middletown.
Police previously said that the stabbing took place in a car on Ridgewood Road and that it was a domestic violence incident so the woman's name could not be released.
Vela will be confined to the maximum security section of Whiting Forensic Hospital in Middletown, the DCJ said.
According to the DOJ, the Psychiatric Security Review Board oversees the "confinement and treatment" of people acquitted because of a "mental disease or defect."
