MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — A shelter-in-place was lifted at Wesleyan University Wednesday after a report of shots fired near campus. Police said that the suspect is in custody.
Wesleyan University said in a statement that a shooting incident did not take place on campus, but instead was adjacent to it. There are currently no reported injuries.
Officers were called to the area of Pearl Street and Court Street at 2:33 p.m. for a report of a shooting incident. According to police, a caller told them that they had seen a blue SUV driving away from Court Street after hearing multiple gunshots.
Once on scene, officers found a suspect running south on Broad Street. After a pursuit on foot through backyards on Broad Street, police said they made an arrest on Hamlin Street.
According to police, the individuals involved in the shooting incident knew each other and that it was not a random act of violence.
Police said in a statement, "There was an isolated incident and we would like to stress there is no threat to the public."
Pearl Street between College Street and Court Street, as well as Hamlin Street between College Street and Williams Street had been closed by police during the investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting incident is asked by police to contact the Middletown Police Major Investigations Unit at 860-638-4140.
