Man arrested after hitting multiple officers, holding one in a leg lock: Branford police

The Stand restaurant called officers to the establishment after the man refused their request to leave, police said.

BRANFORD, Conn. — A man was arrested after hitting multiple police officers and holding one in a leg lock in Branford on May 17, the town's police department said Tuesday.

David Massey, 52, of Branford is facing charges including three counts of assault on a police officer, one count of breach of peace in the second degree and one count of criminal trespass in the second degree.

Police said that they were called at 11:32 p.m. to The Stand restaurant for a report from the management that a customer was refusing their request to leave.

The customer, identified as Massey, began punching an officer "multiple times in the back of the head and neck" as his acquaintance was detained, according to police.

A second officer and an employee of the restaurant brought Massey down to the ground, who continued to struggle as handcuffs were placed to "the front of his body," police said.

As a third officer arrived and attempted lift Massey up, he punched them in the face and then pulled the second officer back down to the ground as he fell, holding them in a leg lock, police said. Additional police arrived and made commands to Massey to let the officer go, but he allegedly kept his leg hold and began attempting to bite the officers.

Massey eventually let go after being hit by one of the officers and was taken into a custody, police said, noting that a taser had been drawn during the arrest, but was not used.

The three officers who were hit by Massey were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Massey refused medical treatment and was released after posting bond, police said.

The use of force in the incident is "subject to thorough review" according to the department's policy.
