NAUGATUCK, Conn — The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, has deployed around 100 people across Connecticut to help thousands of affected homeowners from the storm on Aug. 18.
Bob Fogel, FEMA’s federal coordinator, said money is already being given out and about 50 people per day continue to register with FEMA.
“To date we have given out $2.5 million to survivors and about 952 survivors have registered with FEMA,” he said.
Those impacted survivors still need help, more than a month after torrential rains turned to devastating flooding in southwestern Connecticut.
Along with Fogel, Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Rosa DeLauro met with homeowners in Naugatuck affected by the flooding.
“FEMA is here on the ground, providing aid,” Blumenthal said. “Literally money in days, $2.5 million already has been distributed in bank accounts of homeowners who need help.”
Of the homeowners affected on Cherry Street in Naugatuck is the Grant family.
The family saw 22 inches of rain, which wiped out the first floor of their home. Nearly two feet of flooding almost no one could have predicted.
“We had to use the last of our savings to buy a used camper so we had somewhere to live, it’s not fun,” James Grant, Naugatuck homeowner said.
He predicted it will get worse as the cold months get here.
“The cold weather is going to move in and if that foundation doesn’t get put in the rest of the house is going to come down," Grant said.
