NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven house fire Sunday morning left one person dead and 10 people displaced, according to city officials.
The city's police and fire departments responded to the house on Elm Street by Kensington Street at 6:22 a.m. after dispatch received a call about the fire, according to New Haven Fire Chief John Alston.
A person who drove by the flames reported heavy fire on the second and third floor, Alston said.
Arriving firefighters began search and rescue efforts and found a person in a "lifeless condition," Alston said. First responders attempted to resuscitate him and brought him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police identified the man as Kenneth Mims, 32, of New Haven on Monday. His cause of death is under investigation.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Alston said.
The Red Cross along with the New Haven Livable City Initiative department is assisting the 10 people who were living in the home at the time and were displaced in the fire.
New Haven's Fire Investigative Unit is working to determine a cause and origin of the fire, according to Assistant Fire Chief Shakira Samuel. The State's Fire Marshal's Office is assisting.
"Being raised in New Haven, New Haven is a community, whether I've known them or not, I fell my heart goes out to their family for their loss," Samuel said. "We're tight knit in New Haven, and we're here for them."
