NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Amtrak rail service between New York Penn Station, or NYP, and New Haven, or NHV, resumed Wednesday afternoon, according to Amtrak. This comes after service was suspended Tuesday into earlier Wednesday.
The suspensions followed a brush fire east of NYP, causing trains in the area to lose power.
Amtrak service between New York and New Haven was halted Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out along tracks in the Bronx. There also were delays between New York and Washington and between Boston and New Haven.
A spokesperson for the utility Con Edison said the fire started when Amtrak employees were working on a high-voltage feeder cable and a transformer. The fire spread to a nearby warehouse and to a Con Edison substation parking lot, damaging three cars, spokesperson Philip O’Brien said.
Amtrak said on its website in an alert at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday that service was fully restored between NYP and NHV and that train travel in the area will resume as normal.
According to Amtrak, Metro-North Railroad services honored Amtrak tickets for anyone traveling between New York and New Haven during the suspensions.
Amtrak posts real-time service updates on X for the Northeast Corridor at @AmtrakNECAlerts and @AmtrakAlerts for service information outside the Northeast Corridor. People can also subscribe to amtrak.com/delayalerts to receive emails or text messages for trains behind schedule.
According to Amtrak, anyone with reservations on trains impacted by the service disruptions will "typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or on another day. "
Additional charges will be waived for those who call the reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL to change their reservation during the changed schedule.
Limited services are currently available between Boston South Station, BOS, and NHV.
