NEW HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven police officers shot and injured a dog during the search for a home invasion suspect. Police claim the animal had been released on officers.

Jaiquan Moye, 20, turned himself into police and is facing charges of home invasion, threatening in the second degree, breach of peace in the second degree and risk of injury to a minor, police said.

Officers went to a home at 12:05 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report about a domestic dispute.

The victim told officers that a person, identified as Moye, came to the home and argued with them at the door. After the victim closed the door and ended the argument, police said Moye entered the apartment by pushing in an air conditioner and threatened them with a kitchen knife.

Moye then took off from the scene, according to police.

Officers later found Moye's vehicle in front of his residence on Winchester Avenue. They attempted to speak with an apartment resident to find Moye, but said the man instead "slammed the door" on the officers.

The man later told the officers who were in the building's stairwell that he was going to "release his dog" on them, according to police. A large Pitbull was then "let loose from the apartment," which police shot and wounded after they said it "aggressively ran at one of the officers who fired at it twice."

The dog had a minor graze from the shooting and stayed with the owner, police said.

Moye was not found at the house but later turned himself into officers at Union Avenue. He appeared in court Thursday morning.
