NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A man died after a car collided with multiple highway structures along Interstate 91 south in New Haven Monday, according to Connecticut State Police.
The crash closed the highway in the area of exit 2 for about 3 hours before being reopened, state police said.
Based on preliminary information, investigators determined that around 12:46 p.m., a Toyota Camry was driving along the left lane of four lanes on the highway near exit 2.
State police said that for an unknown reason, the Toyota veered towards the right across all the other lanes and went into the gore area of the roadway, where it hit the exit 2 off-ramp sign support and then an impact attenuator, also known as a crash cushion.
The Toyota then continued going south, hitting a light pole and then a highway gantry post before coming to a final stop, according to state police.
The driver, identified as Segundo Manuel Guaman, 59, of Hamden, was found unresponsive at the scene and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital by New Haven American Medical Response where he was pronounced dead, state police said.
The State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Squad responded to the scene of the crash, according to state police. The highway was closed and did not reopen until just after 4 p.m.
Anyone with information is asked by State Police Troop G in Bridgeport to contact Trooper Trudeau #1141 at 203-696-2500 or Michael.Trudeau@ct.gov. Those who were driving in the area at the time and may have dash cam footage of the crash is also asked to contact Troop G.
