Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell will be laid to rest in Connecticut

The fallen Minneapolis police officer was born and raised in Connecticut. His body has been transported to a funeral home in New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said that when Officer Jamal Mitchell's mother asked him to bring her son's body home, he promised her he would do everything in his power to honor him properly.

It's, unfortunately, a familiar sight. An American Flag flying high as police officers drive past down below. Yet another police officer being laid to rest here in Connecticut.

Mitchell didn't serve here in the city of New Haven, nor did he serve in the state of Connecticut, but that doesn't matter. All that matters to these officers is the Blue Brotherhood.

Police Commissioner Ronnell Higgins said, "I have to say that the state of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Police Department and those surrounding police departments came out to support the family and law enforcement. They set him off as the hero he is, and it's important that we do the same here in the state of Connecticut."

Mitchell served in Minneapolis. He answered a call, and police say he was ambushed, shot, and killed. Minneapolis held a proper funeral for him on Tuesday.

Mitchell's body was carried from Bradley International Airport down Interstate 91 South to New Haven by a police escort. Back to a place he once called home - the Elm City.

His family stood by when Minneapolis and New Haven Police Officers came together to bring the body of a hero to his final rest. Two states bonded over heartbreak and bonded over the loss of an officer who put his life on the line to protect and serve.

Mitchell's funeral services will take place on Monday at Hillhouse High School.

A GoFundMe launched by the Minneapolis Police Foundation to cover the expenses for 50 of the city's police officers, along with 20 Honor Guard officers, to attend the funeral of Mitchell can be found here.
