Minneapolis officer fatally shot in the line of duty to be laid to rest in New Haven

New Haven native Officer Jamal Mitchell was "ambushed and shot" while attempting to help a man who fired a gun at him "without warning," police said.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Minneapolis officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty will be laid to rest in his native city of New Haven, according to the New Haven Police Department.

New Haven police said that on May 30, Minneapolis Officer Jamal Mitchell was called to a shots fired incident in the Whittier neighborhood and was "ambushed and shot" when attempting to help a man, identified as Mustafa Mohamed, who then fired a gun at him "without warning."

According to sister station KARE11, two other individuals were fatally shot, including Mohamed. Four people, including another Minneapolis officer, a firefighter, and two civilians, were seriously injured during the incident.

Mitchell, a New Haven native, will be brought to Bradley Airport in Hartford on June 12 at 5:30 p.m. The officer's family, alongside Minneapolis officers, will meet Connecticut State Police members and New Haven officers from the Motor Unit and Honor Guard to be escorted to the McClam Funeral Home in New Haven, the city's police department said.

Funeral services for Mitchell will be held at the Hillhouse High School Floyd Little Athletic Center on June 17 with viewing hours from 9-11 a.m., NHPD said. Mitchell will then be laid to rest at the Evergreen Cemetery.

In a post on X, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described Mitchell as a "hero" who "made the ultimate sacrifice to serve and protect and save the lives of others." He was also referred to as "a father, a son, a fiancé" and a member of the city's police department. Mitchell had four children he was raising with his long-time partner and fiancé.

"His life and service will never be forgotten," Frey said in the post.

More information about who Mitchell was, the events that unfolded in Minneapolis on May 30 and a memorial service being held Tuesday morning in Maple Grove, Minn., can be found on KARE11's website.
